They have a hydraulic flipper that dumps the rolling cans. The hopper just THROWS the can to the curb.

I see a lot of the same people in this thread who say UPS should fire all the union workers and hire new workers. It is a workers environment now, not employers. The pendulum will swing back at some point but it isn't now.

While not “bad” money, $52k today is worth about $29k in 2000. Not exactly exciting money, either.

I tell my son all the time…. anyone can make money if they possess 2 things, a truck and want-too

But we’re talking about folks that would either be not working at all or working a minimum wage job. It’s a big jump for somebody making $12/hr.

always seems like having the human-on-the-back garbage trucks are more efficient than the grapple trucks.

We had to have our can replaced because the grapple trucks beat up the cans so much that they crack and break them.

The employee that dropped off the new can (had a truck full of new ones) said they spend more money on new cans than they are saving by not paying men to ride and load garbage.

Clearly they don’t pay well enough.

29k in 2000 went pretty far.

A two income family making 52k each would be a 100k family, and double the median family income for most of South Louisiana.

There's a guy in our town who walks around in the middle of the night making sure the garbage cans are in the right position for the trucks to pick up. IDK how much he makes, but he's in great shape. He must walk 6 or 7 miles .

There is no such guy in my neighborhood. If you don't put your can out right it won't get picked up. If the lid is not securely closed it won't get picked up.

I think we still have over 100 jobs available.

Especially for able bodied men willing to work, there are jobs. Sadly many 18-25 year old men have zero touch points with those opportunities and no parental guidance. Primary education is failing young men, and too many of them grow up in broken homes in communities riddled with crime and addiction.

Rather than marine and army recruitment offices in strip malls across the country, those should be national employment agencies that exist to link up whoever walks through the door with employment opportunities somewhere in the country - including the type you are referring to.

Our young men need some help getting onto life’s right path in 2023 America.

As I've gotten older, I've realized more and more that, if you have a car and are unemployed, there's no excuse for sitting at home. You can always make some money driving a rideshare service.

Sure, driving Uber/Lyft full-time is not a long-term solution, but it's a way to have some money rolling in while you work on the job search.

How much does child care cost for this dual income family?

I don’t have a horse in this race. Hell, I don’t even think there should be a minimum wage. But with what our government has done to devalue the currency over the last 75 years or so, numbers like $52k individual and $104k family just don’t mean what they used to, so it’s not surprising people aren’t jumping at the opportunity.

One of the most fit people I've ever seen was a garbage man that worked my ex gf's route in Bayou St. John. You could tell he treated his job like exercise. He'd jump off the truck fling those big cans into the back by himself, and either jump back on or run ahead of the truck to grab the next can if it was moving too slow.

All depends on what you want to work. Electrical I was making around 29/hr plus benefits. 40 hour checks sucked. Running the roads and working OT and per diem its very possible to make over 100K/year in the trades. I'm lucky to have found a job at home after 10 years on the construction side of things. I can finally live pretty comfortable on 40 and sleep in my own bed every night.

There are so many streets out there with cars parked on the street due to no garages and things like that that make the grapple arm unusable. I’ve lived in both places and having them hop off the truck is way better

They will pick anything up around me. They do a damn good job around where I live.

When I was a kid I thought the garbage truck runner had the coolest job. Who doesn't want to jump on and off of moving vehicles all day, especially at 8 years old.

If you can get the equivalent of 35-40K in unemployment/benefits (and other cash side hustles on the side) would you want to wake up super early hang on to the back of a garbage truck and physically deal with trash in the summer and cold for $52k?

I understand the sentiment, the issue is the comfort we allow the bottom of society to have to not work. They don’t have to sacrifice anything to just drift through life
