3 - midlife and she was unhappy. It also didn’t help that she screwed a priest. Yeah I found out about that 10+ years after the fact.

So prior to No Fault Divorce you literally couldn't get a divorce without proof of infidelity or some other egregious behavior ?
Not even if both parties were like "Yeah, this ain't working, let's cut our losses"?
If so, then did people just have to lie about infidelity etc. to get divorce granted

Correct. Charles Guiteau (assassin of James Garfield) and his wife conspired to arrange for Guiteau to have sex with a prostitute so they could divorce.

Although many no-fault laws have a 1-3 year separation period, which would have been grounds for abandonment in most states under prior law, anyway.

And that's why you keep the government out of your life.
Why do people feel the need to grant control of their relationship to the government?
I just don't get it.

1. 3 years
2. She did but I told her I wanted one, but never filed
3. She was lazy, never wanted to cook or clean. Then rang up over 40k in credit card debt I had no idea about. Then told me I’d be stuck with half if I divorced her. I started to not care and frick around and then of course she had to pay me back. Then I dropped her arse after that.

Been over a decade. Don’t miss marriage at all. Why eat a bologna sandwich every day when you can have a buffet.

And 56 % of marriages end in divorce (I realize this can vary based on which study you view).

This is a fake stat that is just so commonly repeated now

the statistic was too hard to count so some group did super lazy math and just took marriages in a year and divorces in a year (i.e. there were 10,000 marriages this year and also 5,000 divorces this year) and came up with the 50%

also, even when done the hard way the stats usually count “marriages” so serial divorces get to count multiple times while those married and stay together count as one marriage

there’s more studies now, I think I saw one recently (but data was a little
old) its around a 20% divorce rate for people in first marriages with at least one college degree in the marriage, for example

1. 17 years
2. I filed for the divorce.
3. I filed because my ex was going to multiple pain management doctors and taking so much prescription opiates that she was not functional by 6:00 PM and we had two young children. Tried to get her help for 7 years. The DEA cracked down on those pill junkie doctors a year after we divorced. Wish they would have done something sooner before millions of Americans died from overdose.

17 years.
I did.
She found someone that she liked better than me.

While it sucks losing half of your shite and only seeing your kids part time, it's one of the best things that ever happened to me.

At this point marriage is not salvageable as a public institution in the West. Better to just get the government completely out of it. Let people have whatever civil partnerships they want, but no more marriages. The Churches and whoever else will still have their marriage ceremonies.
