Don't do it unless it is directly through the manufacturer. 3rd party warranties are largely bullshite and a nightmare to try to get anything done with.

Agree, only get it if it's held in house by the dealer or manufacturer. Gm, Ford, etc are way less likely to go out of business during your warranty. Any of the rest are a shot in the dark.

And they are negotiable irrespective to what they may try to tell you.

The Toyota dealership I bought my truck on wanted 4.5K for the 100k mile warranty.

Saw on a Tundra FB group everyone was buying warranties from some guy in Indiana. Got the exact same Toyota warranty the local dealership was selling for 4.5k for $800 from the other guy.

as someone in this industry and have sold many ext. warranties in my career, not all of the after-market warranty companies policies are the same. I've seen an EasyCare Total care cover some items that not even the new manufacturers warranty covered. It's all risk/reward. Just like buying a 4x4 truck, most folks will never use the 4wd, but it's great to have and not need it than not having and needing. I'm pro warranty, some folks aren't. To each their own. If you can self insure then roll the dice, if not it's a great option.

Dealers make big money on these. Shop around--you don't have to buy it from the dealer. You have a standard warranty that will cover you if you absolutely feel the need to buy extended.

Buy a reliable car and don't worry about it.

Nope, but I know the business well. If you bought life insurance I guess it would suck if you didn't die some day.

Do your homework. How long you plan to keep it? What you buying?

If you are going to buy one, bumper to bumper!

I opted for the extended bumper-to-bumper warranty for my Rav4, goes to 150k miles. I'm not worried about mechanical stuff as much as electrical now. One fault with a CAN-BUS module and it's easily a nearly $2,000 repair bill, which isn't much less than what the extra warranty coverage cost.

I bought it (7 yr, 100,000 mile) on my GMC Sierra. They changed my torque converter at 48,000 miles and my water pump at 98,000 miles. I had to pay $200 for the torque converter because it didn't cover fluids and something else. Paid off for me, it was $1100 for the warranty and all in I had about $3700 worth of work done.

Mercedes or BMW? Yes. However I wouldn’t buy either in the first place unless it’s a vintage one.

Probably an idiot philosophy I have, but:

If it's a new vehicle (which I haven't bought brand new since 2008), I never get an extended warranty.

If used, if there's a year or less on the warranty, I typically extend a year or two.

None of the used vehicles I've purchased have been past the initial warranty period.

I bought the extended warranty through Toyota on my last truck. The 7 year/84,0000 (I think it’s 84,000, may be 70,000) mile bumper to bumper. I don’t like worrying about shite so the extra $2800 spent lets me sleep better at night for 7 years.

Very much this. When I bought my current Tundra a couple years ago it was from a Chevy dealership. I had it very thoroughly checked out by more than one mechanic and I got to speak to the previous owner. Still, when going through the paperwork they put the hard sell on me to buy their extended warranty. After politely saying no thanks a couple times they amped up the pressure and I finally said "look it's a Toyota, not a chevy" and that finally shut him up. Now two years later it's been every bit as stone cold reliable as the previous Tundra I had and my wife's 4Runner.

I went to a Toyota dealership and bought a Chevy. They kept trying to sell me an extended warranty, and finally, I said look, I paid $20k less for this Chevy, I can remove some lifters for less than $1k in parts. And it’s run great ever since and doesn’t get 12 mpg.

I got an extended 10yr 120k mile warranty for 800 bucks on my 2025 Jeep.

I know my shite is gonna break and I know it’s gonna be more than 800 bucks.

Look at the vehicle, what the warranty covers, and the cost.

Buying a jeep or a BMW, grab the warranty.

Just bought a 2026 4 series and you better believe I’m shopping for an extended warranty

Most dealerships have a $2000 mark up on vsc's. If you can negotiate it to $500-1000 over cost, get it. If not, anther dealership will. You do not have to orchard the warranty from the dealer you bought the car from, the Ford/GM/Dodge dealer across town would gladly take that money and sell it to you.

We bought a Honda Pilot several years ago and found out you can shop the warranty from Honda nationally. Find a dealer that has a good deal and buy it from them online. It’s paid for itself with minor electrical issues. Make sure you have a local dealer for service though because bubbas garage will probably void it.

I only buy new vehicles. I had 1 extended warranty. Found a better way.

Don’t buy extended warranty. Why?

First, buy what you can afford.

Second, Have a rainy day fund. It’s much cheaper than warranty. Applies to vehicles, appliances, you name it - completely flexible. Free and earns you money.

Third, as soon as new car is paid off, do the “unthinkable”. Keep paying the note — to yourself! Put the monthly ‘note’ money in something like a money market account (4% return today).

If you can afford the note, then you can afford to do this.

You are your warranty. Your money is there if large repair is needed. As the vehicle is new, probability is low that you will need the money for anything other than compounding interest. It will earn money on money. This is my experience after 8 new car purchases.

Then you will have money towards next new vehicle and eventually pay cash…that saves you from paying interest, that is far more expensive than an extended warranty or repairs.

Good luck!

I think they’re a scam. People will come tell you about the time it saved their arse, and they’re right. But those warranty companies are in it to make money. And they do, a lot of it.

Also if you have advice on whether to purchase it or not at all at anytime and if you do better to from the dealership vs a 3rd party I'll gladly listen to that as well.

Bought a new truck in Jan 25. I checked at the dealer on upping the warranty over the standard about a month ago. I have full 3 yr/36K and 10yr/100K on powertrain. It was going to cost me $6K to raise my non powertrain coverage for 3 more yrs. Even the sales manager didnt recommend it…
