I know, but I had to use a little artistic license.

The high command never thought very much of him, which is why he was stuck commanding Italians in the desert in the first place and why he was sitting in Greece while the life battles for the entire reich were taking place.

I will say he was very suited for being a focus of PR for the western allies

He was fantastic. But he was no Von Manstein. He was probably the best general ever.

Good. But there was a lot of hype.

The Nazis held him up as a great general and inflated his reputation for the folks back home.

Again… not bad. Good. Just not the GOAT that some portray him as.

Good enough to know they lost long before Hitler.

I'm no where close to being a military historian but I once wrote a term paper on whether Rommel should have waited until the Germans gained control of the Island of Malta before the Battle of El Alamein and the answer was a resounding yes.

My guess is he's like Lee one of the most respected Generals of his time but historians will harp on his failures through the lens of hindsight to diminish his overall accomplishments.

Erwin Rommel?

Above average

Helped he had the 88 in Africa when the Brits had the 2 pounder

Like all successful military leaders in the field, he who has the best supply line often wins.

This is the thread where a bunch of E3’s who did a four year stint opine on a General.

He never had a chance in North Africa. Once the Reggia Marina was neutralized by the Royal Navy, the die was cast. The fact he made a game of it with almost no logistical support is a testament to his talents.

*The fact he was saddled with one of history's most inept and useless allies didn't help.

I know that he wrote a book, Patton read it, Patton also kicked his arse across the desert…

I would assess him as a competent and capable commander, though not quite to the level of how he's portrayed in laymen history circles.

Here's an original photo that I own... Can anyone name the General?
I have no clue who it is. Facebook answers are all over the place.

I believe the area to be Russia. The Gen and Car Wehrmacht, and the car a Corps Headquarters.

I know vehicles in Gudarians Division/Corps had a large G... So I am thinking the S should give us some insight into who it may be.

VII Army Corps - Walther Schroth maybe?

Unless he dubbed himself the "Desert Fox" then I would assume people that know what they're talking about nicknamed him that.....so I'm guessing he was pretty good.
