As some of you know I have a son who flys with TF160. I have talked to him in a while but the morning after the SOU address I sent him a text saying it was cool to see a mate of his get the MOH - more as a tease than anything else.

He called last night and we talked about it. A few interesting tidbits:

- to a man, everyone in the unit considers what Eric did just another day at the office. Not to minimize his actions, but that’s just what they do and who they are.

- the first thing my son said is “I haven’t talked to Eric since he got back, but I almost guarantee you he’s pissed at all the attention. He also says Eric is most likely disappointed with getting the award at the SotU because that award deserves its own ceremony.

- Eric has been and was in a ton of pain and standing like he did was a lot.

- the greatest news since that mission is the 160th is finally getting tier 1 level support again. After the Afghanistan withdrawal they have undergone some budget battles but with the current headlines they were asked to develop a punch list of needs and to send it around their chain of command straight to SecDefs desk. My son has been a large part of that and has met with multiple general officers going over the needs and they are on board.

- when SecDef was at Campbell he met with my son and some of the other guys. My son says he’s funny as shite and does a great Trump impression. My son did too and the SecDef and my son got into a Trump off rif battle where they each were trying to out Trump one another. People were on the floor laughing apparently. Good moral boost.

One interesting thing about the MoH. Once you have it, you have to go wherever the foundation asks whenever they ask. They pay travel and what not, but the awardee can’t say no. You sign up for that as a last step to getting the award.

He said more but I’m not at liberty to share. I will ask if your the praying type to pray for Eric as his recovery will be a long road and it’s unlikely he will get back in the cockpit.

Earned not won. It's not a contest.

Recipient is probably the word you were looking for.

Yeah I 100% agree with that.

Damn. That seems like bull shite. What if the recipient isn’t able to make it for whatever reason? They come and take it away? Not trying to be an arse, genuinely curious as I had no idea this was a thing.

Very interesting, thanks for the insight. To me it seemed like he was honored, but like your son said didn't want all that attention. Praying for his recovery.

Privileges and courtesies

The Medal of Honor confers special privileges on its recipients:

Each Medal of Honor recipient may have his or her name entered on the Medal of Honor Roll (10 U.S.C. § 1134a and 38 U.S.C. § 1562) so long as they qualified for the medal under modern statutory authority.
Each person whose name is placed on the Medal of Honor Roll is certified to the United States Department of Veterans Affairs as being entitled to receive a monthly pension above and beyond any military pensions or other benefits for which they may be eligible. The pension is subject to cost-of-living increases; as of December 1, 2023, it is $1,671.16 a month.
Enlisted recipients of the Medal of Honor are entitled to a supplemental uniform allowance.
Recipients receive special entitlements to air transportation under the provisions of DOD Regulation 4515.13-R. This benefit allows the recipient to travel as deemed fit, as well as allows the recipient's dependents to travel either overseas–overseas, overseas–continental U.S., or continental U.S.–overseas when accompanied by the recipient.
Special identification cards and commissary and exchange privileges are provided for Medal of Honor recipients and their eligible dependents.
Recipients are granted eligibility for interment at Arlington National Cemetery, if not otherwise eligible.
Fully qualified children of recipients are automatically nominated to any of the United States service academies.
Recipients receive a ten percent increase in retired pay.
Those awarded the medal after October 23, 2002, receive a Medal of Honor Flag. The law specified that all 103 living prior recipients as of that date would receive a flag.I
Recipients receive an invitation to all future presidential inaugurations and inaugural balls.
As with all medals, retired personnel may wear the Medal of Honor on "appropriate" civilian clothing. Regulations specify that recipients of the Medal of Honor are allowed to wear the uniform "at their pleasure" with standard restrictions on political, commercial, or extremist purposes (other former members of the armed forces may do so only at certain ceremonial occasions).
Forty states offer a special license plate for certain types of vehicles to recipients at little or no cost to the recipient. The states that do not offer Medal of Honor specific license plate offer special license plates for veterans for which recipients may be eligible.
In 1969, the Nebraska State Legislature amended the Nebraska Hall of Fame statutes "to provide that Nebraskans awarded the Medal of Honor shall be named to the Hall of Fame" and required that the Hall of Fame Commission procure a plaque with the names of the Medal of Honor recipients.

Thank you for that correction, because the distinction between the two was really distracting from the post.

One of the most interesting points I ever heard about MOH recipients is that despite all of the accolades and praise they receive, for many of them that was the absolute worst day of their lives. Sure, they were heroic, but they most likely saw some horrible things,, did some horrible things, and had their close friends die. And that always really stuck with me.

Hopefully he can get a stand alone ceremony in addition to the recognition at the SOTU.

I live down here with a lot of retired active and retired operators and just want to ask you to let your son know his actions and sacrifices are respected and appreciated.

God protect him and the other operators are we prepare for whatever this situation in Iran turns out to be.

Common, and part of what makes all of them great.

God Bless this humble hero.

When is your son's podcast and book coming out? Will there be any cat fights with SEALs or Para Rescue? Can he take down any operators who are crappy people or at least lie about some of them? What sort of gossip is going 'round in SOF these days? Can he rank selection for his unit compared to others? I bet no one had a tougher time than he did, am I right? Is he friends with Comstock?

Thank God for those SOF guys. Nothing could get done with out them. If Hegseth didn't promise hookers and blow and an NFL type locker room for those guys, with steak, lobster, and bourbon every day, then he's not doing enough. It's time for the military to finally start treating SOF much better than the conventional guys and give them special privileges. Gosh, what is taking so long?

Seriously, when's the podcast and the book coming out? I want to hear more from these quiet professionals that seek no attention. Will you be his agent?

Which is crazy for him, because he's a Delta Force pilot and would probably like to stay out of the spotlight.

Delta Force baws aren’t glory hounds like the Navy Seals.I doubt a Delta Force operator would even admit to being an operator if questioned.
SEALS on the other hand put themselvs out there at every opportunity.

Chief Warrant Officers are already like unicorns but a CWO 5 is mythical.

This guy probably had Generals already saluting him before this award.

Correct, it's part of their ethos.

lol frick out of here. it's not like it's a rank that is so super prestigious that you have to jump through a million hoops to get to. the reason that there arent that many is because there arent than many billets for them and dudes tend to retire before they reach eligibility for it. i mean it's a good rank and one that someone who gets to it has definitely put in their time and is an absolute expert in their field, but the notion that a general officer - or any unrestricted officer for that matter - would be somehow shaken to his core and obligated to salute a fricking CWO5 is preposterous.

Hilarious. There has been one -1 ONE book ever written by a former 160th member. 1!

CW4 Coker wrote a book and he is basically PNG around the compound over it.

You may have a gripe about the beach boys aka seals and their book deals but the 160th and SF don’t rush out to write books.
