Easy, it pays 150k a year and my 401k is booming with the Iran situation. I only have a few months to go. Dont get me wrong. I once loved the company but it has changed into a woke mess. I can leave anytime. It is financially the right choice to ride it out. I dont have to be happy. I look for new ways to get over every day.
I have employees taking off three months for stress. I cant abide that. I have an old school work ethic. My job gets done everyday but I refuse to do any more unless it benefits me. I am almost sixty now. I am just getting old and cranky.

Just doing the bare minimum - despite how you rationalize it to yourself- is in no way an ‘old school work ethic .’
That dog dont hunt .

Let me rephrase.....I HAD AN OLD SCHOOL WORK ETHIC....HAD......that trait is long gone.
I get paid to complete a job. You are not getting any more out of me.
Working man is a sucker.

plan to retire June 28, although might do it in 27. Had the quarterly meeting with my financial guys - no reason I can't retire today except for healthcare costs - which I can certainly pay but might hold out until 28....although in my heart I want to retire in 27.

I can retire in 27 but might work till 28 or 29 if given the choice.

I retired about a year ago and tell everyone that I recommend retiring as soon as you are financially able. You can think of a thousand reasons not to retire…but believe me, it will work out.
Retire while you are still in good health.

Make better decisions on who you marry, or be a better husband.

Did you make a promise…for better or worse?

Have you ever touched a woman you weren’t related to?

Of course I did and most of the time it's very good. Just saying people change. The person you marry as you say (choose better) is sometimes not the same 20+ years down the line. But I forgot your life is perfect. Carry on sir.

My life is far from perfect, but I follow the promises I made because that’s what a man does.

You don’t sound like an obese person, so will probably have a relatively long retirement. Enjoy it and geaux tigers!

Agree .
It cracks me up when people say (including some in this thread)- that because they retired and had a hard time ‘staying busy’ or ‘finding purpose’- they then extrapolate that to mean that ALL people must have the same issues in retirement .. No, not all of us attach our identity to our careers.. many of us have hobbies and relationships outside of our jobs.. i just wish people would realize that it’s not a one-size-fits -all, or even most .

My wife was telling me about a guy who just called in one day and said he was retiring that day. The poor bloke couldn't even wait until the next month for his 30th anniversary (which would have included a sizable company gift).

So happy for you friend. How hard have the last ten years been. Did it drag by? I’m 53! and have been with same company for 28 years. Plan on working til 65 so 12 more years and I’ll have 40 in.

Hear you on money and the ride into sunset.
I am retired now 1 month. It’s incredible.
Can always get more money. Cannot get more time. Good luck!

Absolutely, you’re more likely to run out of time before you run out of money. The two biggest regrets many retirees have is not retiring sooner and not spending more in the early retired years.

but in terms of raw numbers in the US amongst Gen X, Millenials and younger- most will never retire .
I disagree. My dad is a baby boomer and a huge saver even on a small income. I’m Generation X and invested very well so I won’t need any inheritance I get from him. When I pass my kids will get a windfall from my unused inheritance from my dad and what my savings are. A lot of young adults are and will be inheriting huge sums of money. It explains why I often pass multi million dollar homes and see newborn baby bows hung on their mailbox. I doubt those are people my age having newborns.
