Internet, YouTube and the widespread availability of on demand sports news and highlights killed their traditional product, so they had to evolve towards the sports talk and hot take model.

I can agree with this. I follow my favorite teams on reddit and other social media platforms. I can see highlights faster there than waiting for it watching Sports Center

This is where the downfall is, people wanted to watch SC either at night or in the morning before work not a bunch of talking heads arguing.

Years back when they took it off of basic cable I pulled the plug. I didn’t really miss it. Times like the recent CWS it would have been nice to have but 98.1 did the job.

To make the problem worse, these 50 people would try to out-woke each other. Many times I see the TVs on in the gym, and the only topics they are covering are those they can create a mess with. Frick ESPN.

I saw a clip on some social media where Barkley and Shaq were mocking some dude being wheeled off the court in a wheel chair for a concussion. They were trying so hard not to say why on air but eventually they got to it.

It’s no secret cord cutting and instant highlights on the internet are what caused ESPNs problems. They only went to the debate model when numbers started falling.

THIS. It’s pretty ridiculous that they have it running during football games. It takes up way too much real estate on the screen. I really hope Sankey & the SEC made it part of the deal that it’s removed during SEC games when ESPN takes over. They remove it for NFL games.

ESPN’s main problem is they think their announcers and experts and commentators are more interesting than the product on the field. People tune in the watch the game, not listen to commentators bloviate or inane interviews.

I dropped cable about 15 years ago when ESPN started hiring former professional athletes to give opinions all day instead of showing sports. It was just noise I had no use for.

Now I am pretty much a former sports fanatic because all leagues sold out to ESPN or other cable channels. If it's not on over the air channel, I am not watching and have not missed sports that much.

I have long said I would really love to just watch sports - football, baseball, whatever - with just the game noise and no play-by-play or color commentator. All they do is distract from the game. Especially when they start talking about themselves and their grandma’s turkey soup recipe or whatever.

The downfall of ESPN (An Opinion)

I was traveling all last week. Didn't get to watch any Wimbledon. When I would get into the hotel room each night I would turn on ESPN hoping for some highlights. Almost exclusively there would be a segment about the WNBA every night.

So many bad decisions by ESPN:

Bloating the payroll by hiring so many tv personalities to host daily talk/argument shows instead of just covering sports news

Failed investments like the Longhorn Network and other channels

Forcing “Woke” talking points and storylines, they made themselves the story

Streaming will replace cable. Steaming was once a cheaper option. Now that it’s the more becoming mainstream, it’ll be just as expensive. Nothing makes sense.

Beautiful part about this is you get to control the costs. We have YTTV at my house, but once college baseball was over, we could pause our subscription until the beginning on football season and save 6 weeks on the costs; I missed the cut off to pause by 2 days or it would have been 10 weeks.

Plus, as much as everyone wants to complain about the cost of streaming services going up; nothing has stopped the cable services from continuing to jack up their rates.

I don’t understand the talking head market. For example when they cut Keyshawn Johnson they said he was making $4 mil. Where do they come up with this number? There’s not much market competition for this. I would think several former players would do that job for half a million a year.

but I have to think when they started paying 50 people to give their "expert" opinions on each sport, this was the start of their downfall.
Pardon the Interruption was such a hit when it first aired, it seems like they tried to make every second of programming a clone of that and none of their attempts have worked for me.

SVP and PTI are the only programming worth watching to me and I catch those very sporadically these days.

I don’t know of the old model works anymore, but as a teen I would watch the same sports center on repeat in the mornings. Even SC now is much fewer highlights and much more talking heads. Give me highlights with hosts that can be entertaining while showing the highlights and strip away the rest.

Then add a metric shite ton of debate shows with 6 idiots yelling at each other and the channel became unwatchable outside live events.

Try listening to that crap on radio - S Louisiana has no idea how lucky we are having Guaranty provide the level of Sports Talk they do.

ESPN went from fairly basic sports highlights to anchors trying to one up each other with quips and everything became a joke.

Don’t even care about that. ESPN forgot they are a sports entertainment network. They should’ve spent their money focusing on delivering sports. Instead someone decided they needed a social presence. Then it became less about sports and more about the social aspect. They started other networks to offload the sports so the flagship can run 24 hr opinion pieces and try to manufacture controversy where none exists. Meanwhile the cable model changed, and ESPN didn’t. The network with the biggest footprint should’ve been the leader in that. They didn’t.

The College World Series shouldn’t be on an also run ESPN so the flagship can show First Take.

There's only so many hours a day of live sports and sports highlights that are available as inventory to show on those channels, especially during the daytime part of weekdays.

That was fine when there was only one or two sports stations. They need content to get eyeballs to tune in, and so, talk and especially argumentative talk is what we get.
