Atlanta bought out the remainder of Josef's contract, making him a free agent. He turned around and immediately signed with Inter Miami.

Is it just me or does anyone else really hate MLS copying European team names so blatantly. Atlanta United? What did you "unite"? Decatur and Cumming? Real Salt Lake? Really, the whitest city in the USA using the Spanish word for Royal? Royal what exactly? Inter Miami actually got sued for using that name, but, ironically, it fits since they take players from multiple countries and the city itself is very international. Just my gripe i guess but your very name screams we are a copycat league that is vastly inferior to the original we are copying. That is true but no need to advertise it in the name. Poor marketing.

I think about that sometimes too. It’s interesting if you look at the original team, nearly all of them followed the traditional American route of going City Name - Mascot.
It is all of the continued expansion teams that chose to mirror European names. At least Orlando goes by soccer?
Truth be told, it doesn’t bother me that much except to your point… al of those Uniteds, Reals etc in Europe have a real history and purpose behind the name. It wasn’t just at random.

I'm not a fan of it.
In the case of St Louis City it makes sense, at least locally though. Because there is a very definite distinction between St Louis City and St Louis County, as well as other parts of the metro area. Since the team is located in the actual city.
They claim they chose the name as a way to unite the region, but that doesn't make a ton of sense.
There is a local radio show whose fans have been calling them the St Louis Dogs since they were announced as a way to fight against the European naming convention for a US team. I think it may actually gain some traction since Purina is the jersey sponsor. The radio show sells St Louis Dogs merch in the color scheme of the team with a similar logo too.

United is used in Europe when two or more teams combined to form one team. For instance, Newcastle Westend merged with Newcastle Eastend to form Newcastle United.

Real salt lake is by far the lamest

The league makes fun of the world calling it football and not soccer
Then a shite load of the franchises have football in the name
Ultimate cringe level
But those NBA type names in soccer sound stupid

I don't really care one way or the other. In the early days of the league, people would complain that the sport was "too americanized" which is why you saw Metrostars, Burn, Wizards, etc. change their names.

He will sign with Miami FC.

Sporting Kansas City is the worst name in sports. I also hate that shite. Bring back the Cosmos, MetroStars, Mutiny.

Yes it’s incredibly dumb in almost all situations.
Minnesota United I’ll allow because of the twin cities
Same on Inter Miami for the reasons you mentioned
Everything else is cringe

So rather than align to the international calendar or have pro/rel (2 changes that would improve the product and the national team) they decided let’s be pretentious with our team names instead.

Well they had the silverbacks when I lived there. Actually went to some games.
And honestly Atlanta United is better than something like that.

Pro/rel wasn't a viable option until like 3 years ago. Even now, it's still a risk because the USL, while improving, isn't exactly stable.
I still haven't heard a really good argument for how changing the calendar will massively help the league. Playing during all of the NFL and NBA seasons doesn't seem like a good idea.

The biggest problem with MLS is that people would rather talk about team names than a high profile player being bought out and booted from his club.

Meh he’s washed and there was talk of this happening for a while.
Calling him washed just means he’s scoring a hat trick against OCSC now as karma.

Yes, a lot of us thought it was dumb at the time. Most of us got over it because "united" is a pretty generic soccer name so it's neutral enough, that aside.
It's also pretty lame when every MLS team is like "the five stripes stand for unity, bravery, whatever"- every color and shape has some banal "meaning" instead of just going "well this looked cool." I know they're trying to instill some sort of tradition/meaning to brand new clubs, but I think forcing it makes it seem even less authentic than just telling it like it is.

This isn't just an MLS thing, every sports in every country pulls that BS when they launch a new logo or uniform.

Yeah probably, I just think there was such a desperate desire by American soccer fans to have a level of investment that people took it more seriously than usual. I remember Reddit MLS types buying in on that type of thing in hilarious fashion, when I think in most sports fans elsewhere just roll their eyes when the new kit email comes out explaining why this little element of the sleeve design actually represents the 1906 championship, etc.
