250 years ago the Green Mountain Boys took Fort Ticonderoga.

This marked the first victory for the US in the Revolutionary War.
The British canons were taken by the Americans and brought to Boston to assist in running the Brits out of Boston.

I'm reading the book by Willard Sterne Randall on Benedict Arnold. It was Benedict Arnold and his troops that did the taking.
Ethan Allen and his crew were unprofessional looters that had little to do in taking the fort. Ethan Allen had some political connections which allowed him to get his name elevated in the official account.
Arnold was frankly the best general the Colonies had up until his injury at Saratoga. Too bad he became a turncoat.
If you haven't seen the series Turn: Washington's Spies, it's worth a watch and shows how he was turned by the British. It's too bad we weren't able to capture and execute Arnold after he turned.

It's an interesting site to visit. The fort is much larger than a lot of forts of that decade and it has a phenomenal site in command of the area.
Just getting the cannon down that mountain, across the water and up the mountain to the east and then a long way (on foot) to Boston.

After he was passed over due to politics like 5 times. George Washington even recommended him. The wealth he had he gave it all for the Revolution and was not rewarded despite his accomplishments, injury, and wealth.
Eventually he bargained with the British with a lot hanging on retirement.
He was broke, permanently injured, out of favor, and afraid he couldn't take care of his wife.
That was a massive driving factor in his defection.
Not saying it's right, but it's way more nuanced than most understand.

I have read that Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain were mainly a group of local thugs.
If you visit Vermont, there are 3 or 4 places that claim to be their favorite meeting and hang out taverns. We visited them, they are neat old places to get a drink and something to eat.
Visiting the fort is cool, you drive past some of the old earthworks that are still there and there are some interesting displays.
You can see the higher ground that overlooks Ticonderoga and why it was necessary to evacuate the fort once the British were able to get some guns up there.
I bought a book there about Henry Knox's expedition to move the Ticonderoga guns to Boston. It is very interesting and provides a map of the route they took along with some modern photos.

You misspelled Nathaniel Greene as the greatest colonial general and Daniel Morgan as the greatest tactician. It’s not even close

This feat by Henry Knox and his people is as till amazing to this day. How they achieved this in like 53 days or something is incredible.
