Isn’t it obvious by not even sniffing the postseason by year 4 this job is just way too big for him???
He reminds me a lot of Sun Belt Billy. Good guy with a boring personality with a year or 2 of success at a lower level and took too big of a leap too quick.
We need to go find our next scumbag nut job to come here and compete because those are the only guys who win in college basketball these days.

I appreciate your fandom

There’s probably only 2 or 3 posters on here who will defend everything McMahon does and they only do it to antagonize other posters. The sad reality is that most LSU fans simply don’t care about LSU basketball anymore and you can’t blame them for feeling that way.
The Mc(fill in the blank) stuff is pretty stupid though.

So the playoffs now start in January?
Or is it the other 10,794 threads shitting on McMahon weren't enough for you?

It’s not that I don’t care, it’s more that I can make better use of my time than watching us take an ugly L every game until we get a new coach

There are a lot of things McMahon does well on the X and O side, but I believe we need to change.
From day one McMahon never got the full support of the university and fans. Scott Woodruff brought him in and hung him out to dry. He didn’t get the financial support to go out and get players.
Wade backers didn’t help him. Why would they? They loved Wade. Wade was a winner, he was energetic and he brought in top talent.
McMahon wasn’t energetic; nor could he bring in the talent like Wade could. SW hired the wrong guy.

Why don't you and your like minded douche nozzles give this a rest.
Everyone gets it. There were people who have defended McMahon, hoping for the best. It didn't happen. Maybe some are still hanging on but, in their hearts, they know it's futile.
Let it die.

Like what? This is a false narrative

I can’t “just let it die” as long as he is employed here. This is a disgrace to the brand because he has been that bad. I don’t expect lsu men’s basketball to hang banners or anything. Just be a tournament team maybe 1 out of every 3 years.

LSU fans have always held the notion that if you don’t promote the program and want nothing to do with fans, then you must be a basketball genius.
They’ve also always thought that if you’re a big promoter of the program, then you can’t actually coach.
Sometimes you actually get the combination of guys who do nothing to promote the program and also have no clue how to coach. See Trent Johnson and Matt McMahon.

It is 8:30 am on a Wednesday and you are beating the shite out of a dead horse. Find something else to think about that is more productive.

Reality. Thank you.
The moaning and screeching over this is unsettling.

When Kentucky is up 35-12 with 6 min left in the first half tonight I’ll come back to this.

Ok... So you are telling me right here right now on jan 14th that this team with Thomas return no where in sight will be making the tournament?? If not... what would you need to see for mcmahon to be fired?

Knock yourself out, big boy. It is very edgy for you to get out in front of this early so you can say you called your shot. Good luck.

Seems that if a school is willing to spend the right amount of money on basketball, rapid success is attainable. The issue is how much money is LSU willing to throw at the problem. Seems football is consuming all the air in the room. Then again that is where the money is generated and most of the fan support is behind the football team. Next women's basketball and men's baseball vie for the popularity honors. Other teams are pretty much also rans and have much smaller followings. Am I wrong?

What exactly would those be?

The fans did not want Wade fired. That is true. Of course, he was going to be compared to the former coach. That's natural whenever there is an unwanted change from a successful coach. It happened when Miles replaced Saban. It happened when Laval replaced Skip. But McMahon was given the same opportunity to gain support from the fans as any HC...by winning. NO ONE expected tremendous success by him in year 1. In fact, I'd argue it was the lowest bar for success since Wade's first season after he replaced Jones. Yet, McMahon fell woefully short of even that very low bar for "success". That wasn't a championship roster. It may not have even been a tournament roster for a good coach (though experts/analyst saw it as a mid-tier SEC roster before the season). But it sure has hell wasn't as bad as the results ultimately were. THAT is why he lost the fans.

That's because he didn't go out and get it! The same EXACT thing Trent Johnson did. You have to go out and build relationships with the donors. That's what Mulkey does. That's what Johson does. That's the very first thing Wade did when he arrived at LSU. Football is really the only sport where the HC doesn't have to work the donor base much because of the built-in goodwill. I'm sick of hearing the "woe is me. LSU never gave me any money" BS excuse. He has never wanted to do what is necessary to earn it.

McMahon hasn't signed top 20 players. But his recurring classes (overall --- transfer + HS signees) often were ranked in the top 20. Go compare them to the first 3 seasons of Florida's signing classes. There isn't a ton of discrepancy. Yet there is a MASSIVE discrepancy in the on-court results.

SW hired the wrong guy.
Clearly.
McMahon is a guy that never had any major conference experience (as a player or coach) before coming to LSU. He's coaching mentor was the worst coach at Tennessee in 3 decades. He got the Murray State job basically as a succession plan in a program that had won for decades. Contrary to what many of the bozos on this board often (or at least used to) state, he didn't "build" Murray St. Far from it.
He is a guy who wanted to "build" the LSU program in the same fashion Murray St operated. Disregarding the fact that (a) the SEC is most decidedly not the OVC and (b) the world of college sports, especially basketball, had changed. The model of stacking HS signing classes, redshirting and developing players in your system over the course of multiple years until you had a team of experienced vets ended once NIL was made legal and the transfer rules changed. Yet, he's never figured out how he wants to build a roster because whatever strategy there is in doing so seems to change every year.
The word "fit" gets used all the time. But it's not about where you are from relative to the state you're coaching in. It's do you understand the intricacies of a certain job. History has shown LSU basketball needs someone willing to be active in generated fan/donor support. It needs someone who is willing to get into the mud in recruiting. Basketball is even slimier than football because there is no real AAU equivalent in football. It needs someone that willing to show passion. That doesn't mean screaming at the refs like a maniac. It means showing you're fighting for your guys all game...every game. McMahon has never "fit" and that was VERY evident in year 1. Unfortunately, the fans have had to sit through 3 more years of it to the point where apathy for the program has reached decades long lows.
