Justice Thomas: The Ideas of 1776 Are a Way of Life, Not Intellectual Playthings

The ideas of the Declaration are so powerful that our nation could not coexist with the contradiction created by the great evil of slavery. Those principles were so powerful that hundreds of thousands of Americans fought and died in the Civil War to make men free. Those ideas have been so powerful that they convinced our nation to finally end segregation.
They continue to be so powerful today that they have inspired people throughout the world to throw off the shackles of their own oppressors.
And it all began with our founders declaring in 1776 in the Declaration of Independence that “we hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, and that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”
We should also not forget the important sentence that follows: “That to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.”

No one loves and admires Thomas more than me. He has turned out to be one of the best justices in my lifetime... for that, we are indebted.
I'm concerned of the vibes I'm getting though -- from just a few years back, this time of year, that another of the greats was in the news, when he passed unexpectedly. We still need the Scalia's and Thomases on the Supreme Court. They are thoughtful, wise and conservative jurists.
If nothing else, having something intelligent counteracting the (automatic) 2-3 votes for insanity, on the left, is required.
I would love to think there was a succession plan in the works. ACB shakes that belief.

I am reading an autobiography on John Adams currently and it is pretty amazing reading the post from his diary leading up to the American Revolution. I had forgotten just how much he was involved in the framework of the declaration of independence and the framework of our government.

Thankfully we currently have a president who had the ideas of 1776 instilled in him.

That’s a pretty generous gloss to a reality where
1. the Supreme Court functionally ended reconstruction in the 1880s with its ruling in the Civil Rights cases,
2. Southern states took the opening and imposed Jim Crow Segregation,
3. That segregation lasted for 75 years and only ended when the Supreme Court overruled itself in the 50s and non segregation states imposed the civil rights act and voting rights act on the segregation states.
It remains to be seen whether the South has itself moved on from segregation or if it is still being held back from reimposing such a system.

I believe a person should not be forced to accept another. Segregation should not be forced as well as its brother, desegregation. Let people make the choice. After all, our government must consent to the people.

He is possibly my favorite American from my lifetime. His Biography should be required reading. If he weren't conservative, everyone would have to admit his ascension is one of the greatest examples of the American dream ever.

1. When decideding to elect a President instead of a King a lot of them supported the motion that the elected guy would serve until death instead of a limited term. The lead speaker against this was James Madison who said it would lead to a tyranical mindset.
2. Most of the famous quotes of the Declaration are not original. But they are not plagerized. The founders wrote the quotes down in their notes and identified who said them...almost all were famous philosophers from ancient Greece.
3. The only founder who was not highly educated in a variety of subjects was George Washington. But he was a big guy for that era and could have beaten the crap out of the other founders.
