Is there still appeal in a good ole fashioned family road trip?

Watching National Lampoon’s Vacation and reminiscing about trips I took with my family when Tyga was just a cub. Do people still do this? The longest drive we have made as a family was to Disney, and did it in one night while the kids were asleep. If it’s more than 4 or 5 hours away, we fly if it’s an option.
Clark Griswold has me considering taking 10 days or so and driving the family out west. Kids are different now, ie less of an attention span and takes more to impress/interest them. Anyone done this recently? Is part of the fun still getting there?

If kids are raised on electronics - no
If kids are forced to play outside some - heck yes

I would love to do it if I didn’t have to drive. I friggin’ hate driving more than a couple of hours.

Me, my wife, and 5 year old went on a road trip this summer.
Drove all over the Smokey and Appalachian Mountains and back.
We drove 14 hours one day.

Grandparents bought an old school bus since the family was so large to road trip around the country. No A/C, uncomfortable, and long trips with no idea of when they’d (the kids) get there.
My Pops said it was the best time he ever had.

We went to Tennessee and North Carolina a few years ago and took my kid hiking and white water rafting. She doesn't really like the beach.
We regularly went to Colorado when I was a kid. We always drove.

My family would take 2 month long road trips every summer when I was growing up.
We would almost always go west to the mountains. Spend a week or 2 exploring an area then move on to another area. It was amazing.
Some of my greatest memories came from those trips, so when my kids get older, I definitely plan on trying to give them those experiences as well.

I still enjoy a good road trip, especially if the drive is remotely scenic.

Yep. We just took the kids down the pacific coast and back last summer.

if there was a place worthy of going to with something to do once you get there.
but it would require kids raised to exercise and play outside rather then 24/7 playing on phones and video games.
think about it, where would you feel safe taking your family to walk around and hang out without turning into a crime statistic?

Last May, we did a Midwest trip. 10 days, travelled though 5 states, with out main stops in Colorado Springs, Estes Park, Grand Canyon and a few other places along the way!
Best trip. Wife and 5 kids! Everyone got along great.

Fall of ‘17 took the little Füts through the Alleghenys and into DC.
My ancestral inbreeding grounds.
A great time was had by all.

I'm a road trip kind of guy. Always will be.
Next trip....visiting Zion, Bryce, and Capital Reef NP's on the way to see my dad in Denver.

Love road trips. That was one of the great things about my son competing in martial arts. At least 6-8 times/year we took road trips that averaged around 500 miles. And we’d turn every trip into a vacation and find some things to do in whatever city we were in. Longest road trip was a drive to Chicago a few years ago when we had the big ice storm in the south. The wife wanted to turn back by the time we hit Tennessee. Drove 14 hours the first day, then after getting stuck on the interstate for a couple hours we holed up for the night at the only motel around in 2 feet of snow. Drove another 7 hours the next day. That was the most fun and memorable trip we’ve ever taken. Second longest was a drive to St. Louis. Had a few places we had to fly to, like Vegas, L.A., D.C., but the majority of our trips were in the car. After the first few times, and 8 hour drive becomes routine rather than a chore. I’d much rather drive than fly. Around 10 hours becomes the borderline for having to fly.
ETA: I’d really like to take a two week road trip up the East coast, but I don’t want to leave my dog with a boarder that long, and he gets carsick so I can’t bring him.

Should take them to Europe and do a multi country train trip. Keep them off the electronics of course. And you too.

Road trips are great, especially out west. Not sure how they'd be with family along. Always went by myself, seems like having others around would ruin it.

Damn.
You really shouldn’t fear control your life so much.

I love road trips so heck yeah. But your wife has to be into it too. Cant have her being annoying like your kids. Pack lunches/snacks/drinks.
In 10th grade we did NYC for Xmas, and SanFran/L.A/etc the following summer. All via road.
My mom would pack a hotel/motel cleaning bag with extra sheets in them. My dad would drive all day until tired. Then he'd start looking for a hotel/motel. We stayed at some sketch places that would have vacancy. Ha.
