Unfortunately. If she had been enlisted her career would have been over. I say this as an officer. The double standard certainly isn't fair. But, military dentists are hard to come by I suppose.

The trick is to not make yourself memorable. Swallow your pride for a few minutes and comply. Don't argue. Then call your Police buddy for help.

lol am I the only one that laughed when I got to this part? Based on the description and her being dressed like she's about to storm the field of battle I was expecting a different reality than just "troop dentist".

Those type of agitators need a reckoning.

quote:Only if you have a shitty officer as a squadron commander (I'm a retired Air Force Officer, and a graduated Squadron Commander). I liked to practice procedural fairness, not outcome fairness.
Unfortunately. If she had been enlisted her career would have been over. I say this as an officer.
For instance, I had a dirtbag Airman get a DUI. He failed multiple PT tests, had a referral EPR, multiple LORs, etc. I gave him an Article 15, busted him down in rank, received another referral EPR, and I recommended him for discharge. The Wing Commander discharged him.
Case 2. I had an Airman receive a DUI on Easter night. He was arrested and released without the police notifying the base. The only reason we knew he got a DUI is he came to my office to talk to me the next duty day so he could let me know what happened. We never would have known he received a DUI if he didn't do that. He had to do a class and the DUI would be expunged from his record. This particular Airman was, in all other ways, a model Airman. He was a Distinguished Graduate from Airman Leadership School. He was always the first to work and last to leave. He did anything and everything you could want out of an Airman. He had just tested for TSgt and I had a strong feeling he would make rank. Instead of busting him down to SrA and effectively stunting his career for 5 years, I let him know I was redlining his TSgt stripe when results came out. So he still got an Article 15, but his career wouldn't be over. He would be eligible to test for TSgt in 2 more years. Results came out and he made TSgt as I suspected, and I took that stripe away.
Now, at the status of discipline meeting at the Wing, we have to list administrative actions and discuss punishments. I received a lot of flack for standing up for my Airman, but in the end, it was my decision, and I stood by it. I explained my reasoning and the Wing Commander thanked me for having the courage to do what I thought was right. I had multiple other squadron commanders come up to me and say they had no idea you could do something like that. Hell, it's my squadron and I'm going to run it as I see fit.
So, I say that the only reason the Air Force would be a one-mistake Air Force is if you have a Squadron Commander that isn't strong enough to make their own decisions based on all the information. Yes, overall, there is a difference between how officers and enlisted are treated when it comes to administrative action. But with strong leadership, it doesn't have to be that way.

the problem isnt entirely due to a double standard. certainly double standards exist across the breadth and width of the military on a variety of issues, but this one isnt as egregious as a lot of enlisted folks make it. it's largely due to administrative / procedural issues more than an evil desire to punish enlisted troops while letting officers get away with stuff.
it's much simpler and easier to kill the career of an enlisted person. you just give them bad paperwork and dont recommend them for reenlistment, and they are pretty much guaranteed to be done.
officers dont have to apply for reenlistment so the only option is to take them to a Board of Inquiry or a straight up court martial, both of which are extremely administratively cumbersome and expensive. not to mention that officers are generally mroe prepared to defend themselves in court or a BOI, and often hire expensive civilian lawyers, that reduces to the chance of the government winning anyways.
so more often than not, what happens with officer misconduct is they get NJPed or some other negative paperwork which prevents them from getting promoted. so it kills their career progress, but generally doesnt end their careers immediately. most, if not all of this, remains behind closed doors so that enlisted troops never see their officers being punished.
i think the officer corps' tendency to keep officer misconduct and punishment hidden is probably what causes most of this and tends to make enlisted troops think that there is no accountability. i think the officer corps should be more transparent in general.
